How Salt Water Chlorination Works

Salt Water chlorination from the company that invented it

Health Canada allows only two stand alone sanitation products for swimming pools.  Those are chlorine compounds and bromine compounds.  The Watermaid system produces chlorine from the mild salt water solution in the swimming pool.  Like liquid, granular or puck chlorine, it can be used as the only sanitation system for a pool.  There are other systems that work well WITH chlorine or bromine such as UV, and Ozone.  All of these products (chlorine, UV, Ozone) must be installed and used properly to minimize the health risks to the end user.  The reality is, you have to kill the nasty things in your pool and this takes a pretty big stick some times.  UV, Ozone and chlorine whether it be generated by a salt water system or in a liquid or granular form do this well.

Ionization is another alternative sanitizer that can be used WITH chlorine or bromine.  These systems do not meet the sanitation requirements of Health Canada unless they are used with chlorine or bromine as the primary sanitizer.   There are some environmental and health concerns with ionized metals but they do reduce the need for chlorine.  They do not eliminate it.  I sell salt systems so do your own research on this one.  Do a web search for “health effects of ionized silver” and you might see that these things aren’t as safe and environmentally friendly as the manufacturers claim.  Don’t get me wrong, chlorine and bromine are nasty compounds and have serious health risks as well when not used properly. The reality is, chlorine will combine with things and go away but metals don’t.  Unfortunately there isn’t anything that kills the nasty things in our pools without posing a risk to us as well.  As soon as someone comes up with a totaly safe system, I will be the first to buy it.  It kind of sucks when you are part of an ecosystem and want to be treated differently.

How Swimming Pool Disinfection Works

The Watermaid salt chlorination system makes its own chlorine for swimming pools by converting mild saline pool water (about 1/6th the concentration of seawater) into chlorine.

The process of electrolysis splits the salt molecule (sodium chloride) into sodium and chlorine. At the same time a hydrogen atom is freed up from the water molecules. This produces sodium hypo chlorite (liquid chlorine) for your swimming pool. Sodium hypochlorite is chlorine in a usable form, which purifies and sterilises the pool water.

The Watermaid chlorination system will drastically reduce purchasing or adding sanitizing chemicals such as liquid or granular chlorine. It will also minimise the hazards of handling and storing of chlorine chemicals.

The Watermaid Disinfection Alternative Keeps Your Pool Clean

Not only will you have the peace of mind that the Watermaid chlorination system is keeping your pool, clean clear, sparkling and sterile, but you will also enjoy other benefits of swimming in mild salt water, such as, no sore, stinging red eyes and no smelly or itchy skin, and bathing suits will not disintegrate .

Watermaid Chlorinators are capable of sanitizing pools up to 150,000 litres and can cope with the heaviest swimming pool, chlorine demands. The Watermaid Unit has been engineered to incorporate a fully controllable, chlorine output adjustment touch pad.

You set the amount of chlorine that your pool requires or simple select the chlorine output to maximum to super-chlorinate!

The Watermaid Unit is capable of producing 5.7 litres of liquid chlorine equivalent per day! That is up to double the chlorine production of most other brands.

How the Watermaid pool disinfection alternative works

The Watermaid Ezyclean Cell is the only cell that is installed via a Venturi System. By mounting the cell vertically, the Watermaid system has a functional gas trap without additional water diversion and plumbing. A gas trap prevents the products produced by electrolysis from traveling down the plumbing and getting trapped under solar covers. A gas trap is mandatory on chlorinators in Australia. In North America this is not a requirement but Watermaid insists on maintaining this safety system. If water flow stopped, a gas sensing tang in the top of the cell would shut down the system. Unlike other systems, this is NOT a spring loaded switch. It has no moving parts which could calcify and prevent the switch from moving and shutting down the system. If however, our sensor ever did fail, the bubble of gases produced by electrolysis would force the water down in the cell until the active plates were no longer covered by water. At that point the reaction would stop and the gases would be “trapped” in the cell housing.

This advanced installation method results in:

  • No blockages of water flow through the main pipework due to cell calcification.
  • Reduces the chances of pump motor burn-outs.
  • Increased safety
  • Tighter installation
  • Easier cleaning
