Water quality is assessed by analyzing for:

  1. Chemical Content: Water hardness (calcium + magnesium), Metals (iron etc), nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), chloride, sodium, and organic compounds.
  2. Physical Content: Color, odour, and turbidity
  3. Biological Content: fecal coliform, total coliform and viruses

LaMotte employs a number of methods to achieve water test results, among them, Colorimetric, Titrimetric, and Electronic

Colorimetric

  1. Tests which determine the concentration of a substance are based on Beer’s Law. Simply stated, this says that the higher the concentration of a substance, the darker the color developed in the test, so more light is absorbed by the sample.
  2. pH tests use an indicator which changes color with changes in the concentration of hydrogen ions, or the acidity of the solution.

Titrimetric

Titrimetric tests can be used to determine the concentration of a substance in a sample solution. After the sample is treated with an indicator, a standard titrant is added until a color change indicates a completed reaction. LaMotte offers four separate types of titration methods, allowing a choice of precision and convenience.

Electronic

Electronic methods generally use a special electrode for measuring a specific test factor. An electrode is immersed into a sample and an amplified current or voltage is produced and translated into a digital readout.

Electronic colorimeters measure the amount of light which travels through the reacted sample, and convert the measurement to a reading as ppm, absorbance or %T. In addition to colorimeters, LaMotte manufactures instruments to test pH, TDS/conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity.

Titrimetric

In a titrimetric method, titrating solution (or titrant) is added to a treated sample until a color change occurs. The volume of titrant required to reach this endpoint reaction is proportional to the concentration of the chemical being used. Watermaid carries a variety of LaMotte water testing instruments:

ColorQ Series

No color matching, no look up charts, no guessing! The unique, multi-test ColorQ pool and spa hand-held photometer reads SEVEN test factors (Free Chlorine, Total Chlorine, Bromine, pH, Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, and Cyanuric Acid) directly on a digital display. Featuring an innovative dual-optic design the ColorQ provides more accuracy and more test factors. The ColorQ eliminates the need to visually determine slight color variations or use look-up tables, thus taking the guesswork out of pool side water analysis.

Only 5 drops for each liquid reagent

  • Trilingual instructions in English, Spanish, and French
  • No color matching, no look-up charts
  • Easy push-button control
  • Water-resistant housing
  • 5 minute auto-off function protects the battery life (2 AA batteries included)
  • 6-month warranty on parts and workmanship

Salt Waterproof PockeTester

The Salt PockeTester measures the Sodium Chloride level from 0 to 10,000 ppm (10.00 ppt). This PockeTester is packaged in a rugged carrying case with a special calibration standard (Code 6004-J) included.

Testing Procedure

  1. Remove the electrode cap. Press ON/OFF to turn the meter on.
  2. Place the electrode into the sample to be tested. Make sure the sensor is fully immersed.
  3. Wait for the reading to stabilize. The meter will automatically correct for temperature changes but for the best results, the temperature of the sample to be tested and the calibration standard should be the same.
  4. Record the reading.
  5. Press ON/OFF to turn the meter off. Rinse the electrode in deionized water. Replace the electrode cap.

NOTE: The meter will automatically shut off after 8.5 minutes of nonuse.
